Privacy policy
This site sets no cookies, runs no tracking scripts and loads nothing from other companies. Its web server logs each request with your IP address shortened and deletes that log within 14 days, though a server error could leave a full address in a separate error log for up to five weeks.
Effective 14 October 2026.
This policy covers satellitehomelab.com. The site is run by its owner, whose pen name here is Rowan Hale ("I" below). Questions and requests about your data go to the address at the bottom of this page.
What the site doesn't do
- It sets no cookies and uses no browser storage such as local storage. Your browser keeps only what it keeps for any HTTPS site, such as its cache and a note to always use HTTPS here.
- It gives visitors no IDs, and it has no accounts, comments, sign-ups or forms.
- It has no analytics or tracking scripts, no ads and no social buttons.
- It loads nothing from another company's servers: every script, image and stylesheet comes from this site, and the text uses fonts already on your device.
- I don't sell data about visitors, share it for advertising, or buy data about visitors from anyone.
What the web server records
The site is a set of static files. A web server, Caddy, sends them from a virtual machine rented from Oracle Cloud in its us-sanjose-1 region (San Jose, California, United States). Each time your browser asks for a page or a file, the server writes one line to an access log. A line holds:
- the date and time;
- your IP address, shortened before the line is written: an IPv4 address keeps its first three numbers and the last becomes 0 (a /24), and an IPv6 address keeps only its first 48 bits (a /48);
- the request method and protocol, and the address of what was asked for, including anything after a "?" in it;
- the headers your browser sent, such as the user agent (your browser and operating system), the referrer (the page that linked you here) and the languages your browser accepts;
- details of the encrypted connection, such as the TLS version;
- what the server sent back: the status code, the size, how long it took and the response headers.
Cookie and login headers, and the common headers that carry a full IP address through a proxy (such as X-Forwarded-For), are removed before the line is written. Any other header your browser sends is kept as it was sent.
A shortened address usually points to a block of addresses that a provider hands out, not to one device. Together with the other fields, a log line can still say something about one visit, so I treat it as personal data.
The access log is deleted automatically: each line is gone within 14 days. Once a week a script reads it and writes down totals, such as views per page, which sites and search engines sent visitors, which crawlers came by, and the main language browsers asked for. The weekly totals hold no IP addresses, no full user agents and no times finer than the week, and I keep them.
The server's error log
The server also keeps a technical log of its own errors. If a request to this site ever caused a server error, that line could hold your full IP address. Today that log keeps each line for up to five weeks. A change to bring it to 14 days or less is planned, and this page will be updated when it's done.
Other companies involved
- Oracle rents me the virtual machine and runs the network it sits on, so your requests to this site cross Oracle's network.
- Cloudflare answers the DNS lookups that turn satellitehomelab.com into the server's address. It doesn't proxy the site, so your page requests go straight to the server and Cloudflare doesn't see them.
- Mail to the address below passes through Cloudflare Email Routing and is kept by my email provider (see the next section).
Tools I run summarize the log into counts; the log itself isn't published or sold.
When you follow a link from here to another site, your browser tells that site at most that you came from satellitehomelab.com, not which page you were reading. That site's own privacy policy applies from then on.
If you email me
Mail to hello@satellitehomelab.com goes through Cloudflare Email Routing, which forwards it to my personal mailbox, kept by an email provider. I get your email address, any name you use and what you write. I use it only to reply, and I keep it only as long as I need it to reply, unless it's part of a legal claim.
Children
The site is written for adults who run their own networks and isn't directed at children under 13. With no accounts or forms, the only records of a visit are the server logs described above.
Do Not Track
Nothing on this site tracks you across other websites, and no other company can collect information about what you do across sites through it. So a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal changes nothing here: every visitor already gets what those signals ask for.
Your choices
You can ask what the log holds about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it, by writing to the address below. You don't need to give a reason. One practical limit: because the log keeps only shortened addresses, I usually can't tell which lines are yours. If you send the full IP address you used and roughly when you visited, I'll use it only to find and delete the matching lines, and I'll tell you what I found.
Readers in the EU, the UK and Brazil
I'm the controller of the data described here, and you can reach me at hello@satellitehomelab.com. I use it on the basis of my legitimate interest in running a working, secure site, knowing which pages get read and answering mail (GDPR and UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f); LGPD Article 7, IX). The server is in the United States, so your request and its log line are handled there. You can ask for access to your data, a correction or deletion, object to its use or ask me to limit it, and complain to your data protection authority: in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office; in Brazil, the ANPD.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the effective date at the top changes and the change is listed in the version history at the bottom of this page. If a change means collecting something new or using data in a new way, the updated policy goes up before the change takes effect.
